Francis Mewburn (S & D Solicitor) by George Markham Tweddell 1872

George Markham Tweddell
This is a chapter on Francis Mewburn, the Stockton and Darlington Railway Solicitor from George Markham Tweddell's book Bards and Authors of Cleveland and South Durham 1872. The poem on Francis Mewburn by Peter Proletarius is in actual fact by Tweddell himself - Proletarius being one of his
pen names. Tweddell was a friend of Francis Mewburn. A little earlier in 1869, tweddell had written his book the Stockton and Darlington Railway, posted on here already. The sites above refer back to the research on George Markham Tweddell i did with his descendent Paul Tweddell. Tweddell, born in 1823, used to use the railway in Stokesley, which went through Stockton and then on to Middlesbrough and eventually saltburn. Often he would walk along the sea cliffs and his walks are the subject of some of his other publications. Tweddell was a poet, printer , publisher, author, People's Historian, Chartist and freemason.
